Many of those who enjoy coffee make the move to roasting their own coffee. Roasting coffee is simple and fun. Some people who roast their own coffee may even make the decision to become a master coffee roaster. There are classes for those who wish to become a master coffee roaster. In these classes, students learn to prepare a wonderful cup of coffee for many different palates. Students also learn how to roast their own coffee and how to make the perfect brew of coffee at home.
Master coffee roasters are in demand because of the personalization they can bring to any coffee house or coffee producer. A coffee house with their own master roaster will be able to be accountable for their own quality control instead of relying on a supplier. The in-house master coffee roaster will also be able to tell customers the roast level, the blend, and the origin of each type of coffee available in the coffee house.
A master coffee roaster also can roast the coffee as needed so the coffee house management doesn’t have to worry about ordering, stocking, and rotating stock. This not only saves time, but can potentially save the business from having to throw away coffee that didn’t sell in time. Many coffee houses around the country benefit from having a master coffee roaster on staff because of the freshness in coffee the master coffee roaster is able to provide.
While there is no real certificate in coffee roasting that makes a person a master coffee roaster, the roaster’s guild is currently setting criteria so that those who pursue careers in this path can actually be certified if they meet certain criteria. Much of this criteria consists of the student’s ability in sourcing and sampling coffee. Students will also be require to determine the best roast profile for certain beans and be able to roast it. These students will be required to do this consistently before obtaining certification.
Obtaining this certification can be difficult when it becomes available, but it ensures students that they have learned a sufficient amount before they move on and pursue a career in roasting coffee. Careers in the coffee world can be rewarding and this is no different for those who roast coffee.
poignant post. to be truthful i am not sure i got it completely. but, wanted to step upand comment anyway. are you a journalist by vocation?, because your blog is really strong.
No, I’m not a journalist. I do roast my own green coffee beans. I enjoy trying to figure out the best roast for a given bean.
I thought people who are passionate about coffee might find it interesting to know about what it takes to become a master roaster.
Thanks for the comment.
Hello. Thanks for posting this. It’s pertinent information which I haven’t found on any other sites while browsing for details on becoming a master roaster. If you don’t mind, can you provide the source? I’d just like to read additional information if it’s available. Like you, I’m a home roaster and have come to appreciate the subtleties of various beans. I’ve spent a lifetime in the computer industry and have started to look a short distance into the future – considering what to do when I jump ship (after my son graduates from college.. 3 more years!). Coffee roasting is at the top of the list. In what quantities do you roast? I’ve been eyeballing various 1 lb sample roasters..
Hi,
What a small world. I used to be a software engineer.
I started with a FreshRoast, then built my own Stir Crazy/Hot Top roasters and now have the Behmor drum roaster which I like very much.
I roast around a pound at a time. I add more/less beans to make a lighter/darker roast, since the amount of time you can add or subtract to the normal roast cycle on the Behmor is limited.
You should check out the Specialty Coffee Association of America web site (http://www.scaa.org). They offer classes around the US on coffee brewing, cupping, grading, roasting, etc.
Also, The Roasters Guild offers an apprenticeship that you may want to take a look at (http://roastersguild.org/accredidation_pr.html).
