Hi,

What a small world. I used to be a software engineer.

I started with a FreshRoast, then built my own Stir Crazy/Hot Top roasters and now have the Behmor drum roaster which I like very much.

I roast around a pound at a time. I add more/less beans to make a lighter/darker roast, since the amount of time you can add or subtract to the normal roast cycle on the Behmor is limited.

You should check out the Specialty Coffee Association of America web site (http://www.scaa.org). They offer classes around the US on coffee brewing, cupping, grading, roasting, etc.

Also, The Roasters Guild offers an apprenticeship that you may want to take a look at (http://roastersguild.org/accredidation_pr.html).

Hello. Thanks for posting this. It's pertinent information which I haven't found on any other sites while browsing for details on becoming a master roaster. If you don't mind, can you provide the source? I'd just like to read additional information if it's available. Like you, I'm a home roaster and have come to appreciate the subtleties of various beans. I've spent a lifetime in the computer industry and have started to look a short distance into the future - considering what to do when I jump ship (after my son graduates from college.. 3 more years!). Coffee roasting is at the top of the list. In what quantities do you roast? I've been eyeballing various 1 lb sample roasters..

No, I'm not a journalist. I do roast my own green coffee beans. I enjoy trying to figure out the best roast for a given bean.

I thought people who are passionate about coffee might find it interesting to know about what it takes to become a master roaster.

Thanks for the comment.
