Some roasters come with a built in thermometer which allows those roasting beans to keep track of the temperature inside the roaster. When beans are roasted they will turn from green to yellow and will finish at brown. This is because of the caramelization process that the sugars in the beans go through when being roasted.
Pre-roasted coffee is brown whereas fresh coffee beans will be green. It’s a good idea to roast the beans until they turn brown. The natural oils in the coffee beans will come out in the roasting process so the beans will also be covered with oil. Those roasting the beans will notice a strong coffee smell in the air and will hear cracking sounds as the roasting of the beans nears the finish. It’s a good idea not to use the beans right away, but wait about 12 hours after the roast for the best flavor.
Roasting coffee beans is actually fairly simple and only takes a few minutes to do. Coffee beans only take about 10-20 minutes to roast to the beautiful coffee brown color. Those roasting coffee will start to notice familiar coffee smells as the coffee roasting process is near its finish. Once the natural oils start coming out of the beans, they are finished.
After they are removed from the roaster and cooled, it’s a good idea to remove any excess oil from the beans before grinding them. Roasting coffee is the perfect way to get the best tasting coffee. It is also a great way to personalize the flavor so that coffee drinkers can get the flavor they love.
